NEW YORK HERALD, May 2, 1872

* David Livingstone found
* Henry Morton Stanley

James Gorden Bennett, this newspaper's publisher, capitalized on the 19th century fascination with Africa & the whereabouts of explorer Dr. David Livingstone by hiring journalist Henry Stanley to search for him. Livingstone had ventured to Africa in 1865 for a 2 year expedition with little heard from him since.
So it is of no surprise that the Herald offered extraordinary coverage of the adventures of Stanley and Livingstone in Africa and no surprise as well that the Herald would be the first newspaper to announce the finding of Livingstone.
Page 7 begins with column heads: "LIVINGSTONE SAFE" "Herald Special Report from London" "The Great African Explorer Found and at Zanzibar with the Herald Search Expedition Commander" "Grand Triumph of American Enterprise" "History of Livingstone's Travel and of the Successful Search in Quest of Him"
The detailed and informative report takes over a full column.
There had been doubts by many whether Livingstone was, in fact, alive.
Complete in 12 pages, very nice condition.
