November 27, 1863

NEW YORK TRIBUNE, Nov. 27, 1863

* General Stephen A. Hurlbut
* Antisemitic orders on Jews
* Confiscating Jewish property
* Battle of Lookout Mountain

The back page has a somewhat obscure article headed: "The Fright of the Jews--High Prices..." which reports: "Quite a sensation exists here & in other river cities about the order of Gen. Hurlburt [sic] at Memphis, by which all the able-bodied men are forced to enter the military service. Many parties with heavy stocks of goods went thither to go into business, particularly Jews...we learn they are devising every means to leave Memphis & save their goods, but in vain, for the moment they leave their goods will be confiscated...The fact is, the great majority of these traders are Jews & they have not hesitated to go into the smuggling business. Honest traders will suffer with them, but on the whole, good will result...".
It has been suggested by the historian Bertram Korn that during his garrison duty at Memphis, Tennessee, Hurlbut issued antisemitic orders confiscating Jewish property and preventing Jews from trading.
Also much front page reporting on the Battle of Lookout Mountain.
Eight pages, a small 1 1/2 by 2 1/2 inch ad clipped from the back leaf, otherwise great condition.
