First Hebrew Free School in New York City... Reconstruction...

Item # 670894

June 16, 1865

 NEW YORK HERALD, June 16, 1865

* 1st Hebrew free school in NYC
* Post Civil War reconstruction

The front page has a great amount of content on the Reconstruction process in the South including: "Reconstruction Gossip at the National Capital" "The People of the South Converted by the Sword to the Northern Version of the Constitution" "They Accept the Overthrow of Southern Dogmas and the Institution of Slavery as Effective & Final" "The Work of Reorganization Goes Bravely On" and more.
Also of interest is a back page item: "Dedication of a Hebrew Free School" which begins: "The first Hebrew free school ever established in this city was dedicated yesterday afternoon with imposing ceremonies...no. 36 Avenue C, near Fourth St. Mr. M. S. Cohen, the President of the association...presided..." with much more (see). Research shows that the very first Hebrew Free School in New York was dedicated in June, 1865, at 42 C Street near Fifth St. I suspect this is the same school.
Eight pages, a bit irregular at the spine, very nice condition.
