THE TOMBSTONE EPITAPH, Cochise County, Arizona, October 16, 1881
* Best Old West title to be had
* Pre Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
Few could argue for a more recognizable title from the Old West, nor could any town be more linked to the romance of the West than this one. Tombstone is steeped in Western lore, and the several movies done concerning the gunfight at the O.K. Corral have kept this town in popular culture. This issue was printed just ten days prior to the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
This issue even has mention of the Earps, with a page 3 report of a scuffle which reads: "...Col. A. G. P. George became enraged yesterday at Harry Barron's over a matter of a small bill, and it is said was using some very abusive language to Mr. Barron, when the book-black of the place interfered: whereupon Col. George drew a pocket-knife and struck him two blows in the face, just in front of the ear, cutting an ugly but not necessarily fatal wound. Marshal Earp arrested George on a charge of an assault with intent to kill and turned him over to the sheriff's office...". This mention of "Marshal Earp" was likely Virgil Earp, although Wyatt Earp was a deputy marshal at the time.
There is other good and typically Western content as would be expected to be found in this wild mining town of the Old West. There is even a"$500 Reward" notice "...for the arrest and conviction of the five men who robbed the stage between Benson and Contention...".
Complete in 4 pages, various archival mends & reinforcement at the margins, lightly toned throughout, archivally rejoined at the spine.
A very rare & desirable newspaper as any extant issues of this paper all came from just one institution in California.
