May 26, 1869

THE SAN DIEGO UNION, California, May 26, 1869

* Completing the Transcontinental railroad
* Promontory Point - last spike

The front page has most of a column taken up with the: "Celebration in Honor of the Completion of the Pacific Railroad" Among the subheads are: "The Last Tie" and: "The Last Spike", describing what these ceremonial pieces, including the tie: "Is made of a very elegant log of the beautiful California laurel wood...about 7 feet in length...polished as bright as a mirror..." with more. And the spike: "Is made of solid gold and weights 18 ounces--nearly $340...It is handsomely polished and is engraved with the following inscription..." with the details. Much on the ceremony as well.
This is follow by: "Telegram to President Grant" from Leland Stanford and Thomas Durant, noting: "...We have the honor to report the last rail laid, the last spike driven. The Pacific Railroad is finished."
There over half a column of the ftpg. is taken up with: "The History of the Pacific Railroad".
Terrific to have this report in a West Coast newspapers. Most we have offered have been from Eastern newspapers.
Four pages, some foxing, generally good condition.
