THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, England, Aug. 30, 1856

* Rare Florence Nightingale illustration

Close to half of the front page is taken up with a print captioned: "Miss Nightingale's Carriage at the Seat of War". Page 2 has an article with the same heading.
This is the famed Florence Nightingale, who came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organized care for wounded soldiers. She gave nursing a favorable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night.
This issue has a nice centerfold on the Crimean War: "Evacuation of the Crimea by the Allies...Balaclava".
Sixteen pages, great condition.
