First Jew appointed to a federal post...

THE UNIVERSAL GAZETTE, Washington, D.C., June 11, 1801 It is reported in a brief, inconspicuous report on page 2, but its significance is considerable.
It was in 1801 when a significant stride in the recognition of Jewish Americans when President Thomas Jefferson appointed the very first Jew to a federal position by naming Reuben Etting of Baltimore as United States Marshall for Maryland. This report--likely not found in many newspapers of the time--notes this appointment under the heading: "Appointments by the President of the United States".
The website JewishPost.com has a list of 20 significant events in Jewish American history headed: "United States Presidents and the Jews: From George Washington to George Bush". The appointment noted in this Universal Gazette is number 2 in that list.
We have only been able to offer one other issue of this report in our 44 years. This is a better report as it appears in this newspaper from the nation's capital, where the decision was made, and the report has more "presence" than is found in the other.
A significant report for any Judaica collection.
Four pages, evenly toned, indents at the blank spine due to disbinding, nearly close-trimmed at the top but no loss of type, minor archival mend to an upper corner.
