February 20, 1788

THE MASSACHUSETTS CENTINEL, Boston, Feb. 20, 1788

* United States Constitution
* North Carolina ratification ?

The entire ftpg., all of page 2, and a column of page 3 are taken up with some terrific discussion on ratifying the Constitution by the state of Massachusetts, dates of Jan. 30 and Feb. 1.
There is discussion as to whether it should be required that: "...the rulers ought to believe in God or Christ...and that a person cold not be a good man without being a good christian..." and so much more. It is apparent Mass. was close to ratifying, as pg. 2 notes: "...that a motion had been made and seconded, that this Convention do assent to, and ratify, the Constitution which had been under consideration..." and much more. Massachusetts would formally ratify on February 6. Very good reading!
Page 3 has a report headed: "Seventh Pillar Raised (if true.)" noting: "...from North Carolina we have a confirmation of the pleasing intelligence of that state's ADOPTING the NEW CONSTITUTION--New Hampshire Convention are now in session; South Carolina meets the third of March..." with more. There is also a report from Hartford concerning ratifying the Constitution, and also an article: "New Hampshire Convention" on the discussion there.
Constitution-related content takes all of pages 1, 2 and two-thirds of page 3. And there is some content on page 4!
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, good condition.
