August 04, 1781

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, Aug. 4, 1781  Most of the front page & some of page 2 are taken up with letter from Lord Rawdon to Cornwallis from Monk's Corner beginning: "The situation of affairs in this province has made it necessary for a time to withdraw my force from the back country & to assemble what troops I can collect at this point..." with many particulars of a battle in the Carolinas, including: "...On the 9th I published to the troops & to the militia my design of evacuating Camden..." with more.
This is followed by another letter from Lord Rawdon dated at Charleston, beginning: "General Greene invested Ninety-six on the 22nd of May..." with much detail. Then a note to Sir Henry Clinton from Portsmouth, and much on the events in the Caribbean as well.
There are two letters from off Sandy Hook, one noting in part: "...The Rebel General Greene, after his defeat at Guildford Court House, penetrated into Carolina & after his second overthrow by Lord Rawdon at Camden, giving up all thoughts of Charles-Town [Charleston]...invested our post at Ninety-Six..." with more.
Six pages, period writing at the top, partial red tax stamp on the ftpg., good condition.
