THE NEW YORK TIMES, August 17, 1868

* Lynching of Samuel Bierfield
* First Jew lynched in United States
* Jews - Jewish - Judaica item
* Ku Klux Klan - KKK members

Near the bottom of the front page is an article with small heading: "Murderous Outrage at Franklin, Williamson County, Tenn.-Two Men Shot Dead", being the account of the killing of a Jewish shop owner and his black employee by 15 masked men on horseback. The shop owner, Samuel Bierfield, is believed to be the first Jew lynched within the United States.
Complete in 8 pages, some light foxing, generally very nice.

wikipedia notes: Samuel A. Bierfield (? - August 15, 1868) is believed to be the first Jew lynched in the United States. Bierfield and his African-American clerk, Lawrence Bowman, were confronted in Bierfield's store in Franklin, Tennessee and fatally shot on August 15, 1868 by a group of masked men. The killers were believed to belong to a local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, which had emerged as an insurgent force in the state in 1866.
