October 27, 1838
NILES' NATIONAL REGISTER, Washington City, Oct. 27, 1838 Page 3 has: "Interesting From The Cherokee Country" which includes two documents each signed in type by: Winfield Scott. It begins: "The removal of the Indians, by land...will be prosecuted with great energy & dispatch until completed...". This was part of the "Trail of Tears" movement, the relocation of Native Americans including Cherokee, Creek, Seminole & Choctaw nations from their homelands to the Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Estimates are that 4000 of the 15,000 relocated Cherokees died on route.
Somewhat related is: "The Indians In The West" which is a letter from various Indian chiefs, each signed with their "X".
Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 11 3/4 inches, very nice condition.
As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
