December 28, 1802

THE BALANCE & COLUMBIAN REPOSITORY, Hudson, New York, Dec. 28, 1802  The entire ftpg. is a piece which simply skewers the character of Thomas Paine, headed: "Thomas Paine" and beginning: "A being without a home--a being without a country--a wretch without character--a wretch lost to shame--an incendiary in Europe--an incendiary in America--the first reviler of Washington--the bosom friend of Jefferson--overshadowed with crimes--devoted to the most bestial intoxication--the enemy of all religion--of all morality--the blasphemer of God is amongst us! And the president of the United States has invited his unhallowed steps to our shores...My country! My country! how art thou fallen!..." with much more.
Page 3 has three more articles on Thomas Paine.
Pages 4, 5, 6 & 7 contain Jefferson's state-of-the-union address, headed: "President's Message". The lengthy address--in which he reviews the accomplishments & challenges of the year--is signed in type: Th. Jefferson.
Eight pages, 9 1/2 by 11 inches, slightly uneven at some margins, nice condition.
