May 14, 1860

NEW YORK HERALD, May 14, 1860

* Famous slaver "Wildfire" captured
* African slave trade print fame
* Abraham Lincoln for president?

Most of the first column is taken up with a fascinating article: "The Slave Trade" "Full Particulars of the Capture of the Slaver Wildfire". The article begins: "The great event of the past fortnight...has been the capture by the U.S. steam Mohawk...of the slave bark Wildfire and her cargo of 520 negroes...". This was a notable slave ship, made somewhat famous by the print of it found in the June 2, 1860 issue of Harper's Weekly.
Also of interest on the ftpg: "The Chicago Convention" being the Republican Presidential Convention. Curious that there is mention: "...A strong feeling in favor of banks and Wade...it si generally understood, however, that they will urge the nomination of Abe Lincoln, and failing in their efforts, will go for Seward...". This is rare, early mention of Lincoln in the nomination process.
Eight pages, originally cut at the spine but since re-glued so a bit irregular at the spine margin. Otherwise good.
