CAMPAIGN EDITION OF THE NEW YORK TIMES

* General Ulysses S. Grant for president
* Extremely rare campaign publication

This is a very rare & short-lived title. Noted at the beginning of the ftpg: "During the present Presidential Canvass, we shall publish a Special Weekly Edition for the convenience of those who desire the latest and most trustworthy political intelligence...". Also noted is: "...The New York Times is a Republican newspaper, and will, during the canvass now actively going on, steadfastly maintain established principles of that party...".
Curiously there is no date anywhere in the issue, but as it was produced to support the Presidential Campaign of the Republican incumbent candidate U.S. Grant in the 1872 election, it was obviously printed in that year.
The rival candidate was Horace Greeley, publisher of the N.Y. Tribune. As might be expected the content is largely anti-Greeley
This is a four page newspaper, never bound nor trimmed. A bit of light foxing, two folds with minor fold wear. Inside has a few older tape mends.
Records indicate that this title is not recorded in Union List of Series, nor is it recorded in Gregory: American Newspapers, 1821-1936. And it is not listed in Mott: "The People's Voice: An Annotated Bibliography of American Presidential Campaign Newspapers, 1828-1984".
A very rare newspaper and the first we have encountered.
