June 27, 1862

NEW YORK TIMES, June 27, 1862

* General Benjamin Butler
* Women of New Orleans

The front page is filled with various Civil War reports including some one column heads: "From Gen. M'Clellan's Army" "The Step in Advance Toward Richmond" "Gallantry of Our Troops" "Camp of the Rebels Occupied by Hooker's Men" "Corps of Gens. Fremont, Banks and McDowell Combined" "The Shenandoah Valley" "News From Memphis" and more.
The prime content is the interesting front page text headed: "The Women and Gen. Butler" with items from Southern newspapers concerning the reaction to the very controversial address Butler made the previous month to the women of New Orleans, essentially considering them prostitutes and stating they would be treated as such, etc.
Another article on the front page discusses the probable destruction of the Merrimac.
Page two has a report headed: "Our Affairs in England - Gen. Butler's Proclamation In the House of Lords" which gives their take on the Butler controversy, reprinting in part the original Butler Proclamation from May.
Eight pages, some printing errors inside, nice condition.
