THE SALEM GAZETTE, Massachusetts, October 9, 1783

This issue has a variety of news items concerning the end of the Revolutionary War. The front page of this issue features a report noting: "Dr. Franklin writes to a friend, that he has reason to suspect the Americans have no friends in Europe; for the same caution that now aims at restraining their trade, will eventually control their power."
The back page features a Petition of the People called Quakers: "...having solemnly engaged considered the state of the enslaved Negroes...entitled to the natural rights of mankind, are held as personal property in cruel bondage;... your petitioners, deeply affected with a consideration of the rapine, oppression and bloodshed, attending this traffic, humbly request that this restriction may be extended to all persons whatsoever, or that the House would grant such other relief in the premises, as in its wisdom may seem meet...".
Four pages with masking tape at the spine not touching any type, archival mends inside near the gutter, some spotting, minor wear. Measures 9 1/2 by 14 1/2 inches.
