THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, June 22, 1779 

* Burning of Norfolk & Portsmouth by the British

The entire front page, and most of page 2, are taken up with reports on this historic taking of Portsmouth & Norfolk, Virginia, by the British. There is a prefacing note at the top of the front page concerning the lengthier report, followed by a letter from Major General Mathew to General Henry Clinton which includes some details on his successes, including: "...Having taken possession of the fort...I encamped in two lines, right to the fort...On the 12th the guards marched at night to Suffolk..." with more.
And what follows this is a very lengthy & detailed account of the action in a letter from Sir George Collier to General Clinton (see for portions), signed by him in type: Geo. Collier. Pages 2 & 3 contain a lengthy list of the stores, ships *& other items taken at Portsmouth & Norfolk.
Four pages, partial red tax stamp on the ftpg., 7 3/4 by 12 inches, good condition.
