January 05, 1831

HAMPSHIRE GAZETTE, Northampton, Mass., a trio of issues dated Aug. 25, Oct. 6, 1830; and Jan. 5, 1831

* Captain Joseph White murder
* John & Joseph Knapp - brothers
* Salem, Massachusetts crime

These 3 issues deal with the sensational case of murder perpetrated by John Francis Knapp.
The significance of this trial (by famed lawyer Daniel Webster) is that the actual murderer was a hired assassin named Richard Crowninshield, who committed suicide before the Knapps went to trial. Due to Webster's eloquence, this became one of the first cases in which accessories to murder were tried, convicted and executed even though the actual murderer was never convicted.
Aug. 25 has the entire ftpg. taken up with; the: "Trial of John Francis Knapp"; the Oct. 6 issue has on page 2: "Execution of Knapp"; and Jan. 5 has: "Execution of Knapp" as well.
All 3 issues are complete in 4 pages and in good condition save for some loss to the back leaf of Jan. 5 (see photos).
