THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, England, March 9, 1861

* Extradition case of John Anderson
* Canada West escaped slave w/ print

“The Fugitive Anderson” on page 3 is about John Anderson, the famous fugitive slave who escaped to Canada evading the pursuit of bounty hunters. While on the run he killed a farmer who intended to legally recapture Anderson and send him back into his master’s custody. Anderson lived and worked in Canada West from 1854 to April 1860, managing to keep a low profile. He was eventually arrested and held by a magistrate in Canada. Another article on him: "Release of Anderson, the Fugitive Slave" appears near the back and includes a print captioned: "John Anderson, the Fugitive Slave in Canada."
An interesting page 10 article headed: "Death Of The State Executioner" includes portions reading: "John Lund...died on Wednesday...He held the appointment for many years as Headsman at the Tower of London, whose duty it was to decapitate all state criminals...most likely the situation will be abolished...The last state execution took place in 1746...Mr. Lund was only seen at the Tower when the half-yearly muster took place...with a large bright hatchet on his shoulder."
The ftpg. has an engraving captioned: "A Barber's Shop at Richmond, Virginia" which shows a Black man shaving a customer in a barber's chair.
Complete in 24 pages, very nice condition.
