April 18, 1862

NEW YORK TIMES, April 18, 1862

* Memphis TN Tennessee
* Battle of Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing)
* Jews - Jewish - Judaica

The front page features a nice, detailed map headed: "THE PRESENT SCENE OF OPERATIONS IN THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY. Map showing the Line of the Mississippi from Cairo to Memphis & the Rebel Forts, Including Fort Pillow...".
There are also nice column heads including: "The War In The Southwest" "Operations of Commodore Foote at Fort Pillow" "Good News From Gen. Banks" "The Enemy Driven Out of Mount Jackson" "Capture of Locomotives & Rolling Stock" "Rebels Reported to be in Force at Rude's Hill" "The Siege Of Yorktown" "A Wholesale Dread of Our Sharpshooters" and more.
Page four under "Shiloh" has: "We learn from Gen. Beauregard's letter to Gen. Grant, asking leave to bury his dead, that the field which our brave fellows fought so stoutly and won so nobly should be called Shiloh and not Pittsburgh Landing." It continues: "For Shiloh means deliverance; and on that field of Shiloh we believe that the deliverance of our country was really accomplished. The field of Shiloh be it then.  We thank thee, Jew, for teaching us that word."
Eight pages, a bit irregular at the blank spine, very nice condition.
