THE LONDON EVENING POST, England, Oct. 2, 1779  Page 3 has a report datelines from Charleston prefaced with: "The following is the American account of the action at Stono Ferry, in South Carolina, on the 20th of June last.", with much fine detail.
This is followed by another report on the affairs in America, a few bits including: "...believe...that the fort at Rock Point & that at Paulus Hook have been forced by the American army & every soul put to the sword. General Wayne solicited the command against that of Rock Point in which were 400 British troops..." and more. Then: "General Washington, a few days before the attack upon Rochfort & before the plan of giving no quarter to the enemy was fixed, wrote a letter to General Clinton of his intention to do so, provided he would not publicly disavow the then barbarous mode of war carrying on by the mercenary army & their adherents, the Tory Refugees..." with more.
But the most interesting item is the nearly full column headed: "Memoirs of the Celebrated Paul Jones" which includes in part: "...On the breaking out of the American war, he offered his services to those states & was accepted; here he shewed such courage & dexterity...Paul, after this plunder, put into one of the ports of France & immediately wrote up an account of the particulars to Dr. Franklyn [Franklin], but that statesman condemned the measure..." with more, and ending with: "...is between 40 and 50 years of age, of a vigorous, seasoned constitution, not very nice in his morals or refined in his understanding, but made up of much cunning & knowledge of the world...".
The back page has a notable report concerning John Paul Jones and his Bon Homme Richard & Serapis encounter. "Paul Jones's squadron appeared in sight for the first time, last Monday off Scarborough Castle...to inform Captain Pearson (who, to convoy this fleet commanded the Serapis man of war of 44 guns, capable to mount 50, who had also the  Countess of Scarborough armed ship...commanded by Capt. Percy) of Jones being on the coast with a fleet of two...wrote he was, notwithstanding the superiority, not afraid to meet the enemy...at seven o'clock in the evening was attacked by Jones with four frigates referred to above. The action was undoubtedly very sharp & lasted till eleven o'clock when both his Majesty's ships struck..." with more on this (see the photos). Included is a chart of "Jones's Squadron" which includes, now, "His Majesty's late ship Serapis (lost her main mast)" as well as "His Majesty's squadron in search of Jones."
The bkpg. also has a report beginning: "The victory (as it has been called by some of the ministerial prints) which Major General Prevost has lately gained over the American, will, we fear, turn out worse than a defeat..." with more.
Four pages, folio size, never-trimmed margins, red tax stamp on page 3, very nice condition.
