September 02, 1779

THE AMERICAN JOURNAL & GENERAL ADVERTISER, Providence, Rhode Island, Sept. 2, 1779  A truly rare title from the Revolutionary War, as it lasted for less than 1 1/2 years from March, 1779 to August, 1781.
Nearly one-third of page 2 is a letter from an officer in the British army from Port Royal with his account of the Battle at Stono Ferry, a failed attempt by the Americans, under General Lincoln, to attack General  Prevost's forces as they were moving from Charleston to Savannah.
Then a report noting a military skirmish with Indians and Tories in New York. And a note that: "General Sullivan has penetrated the Indian country ninety miles west of Wyoming, and burnt Chemung, one of the chief towns of the Senecas and killed & took 350 Indians...".
Page 3 features a report on the Battle of Chemung, New York, in an: "Extract of a Letter from his Excellency General Washington to the Honorable Major-General Gates...." beginning: "General Sullivan arrived the 11th of August at Tioga, without loss or opposition: On the 13th he destroyed Chemung...The enemy evacuated the place the evening before..." with much more detail.
Over half of the back age is a letter dealing with the increasing prices of commodities & the depreciation of the currency in the colonies, a notable concern at the time.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed with wide margins, a bit irregular at margins but not close to any words, nice condition.
