August 21, 1781

THE CONNECTICUT COURANT & WEEKLY INTELLIGENCER, Hartford, August 21, 1781

* Benedict Arnold compared to Judas Iscariot
* American Revolutionary War events in the South

The front page has  a report concerning Benedict Arnold, with one item noting: "Judas Iscariot betrayed his master for 30 pieces of silver, but repenting of his  guilt returned the money into the treasury & went & hanged himself. Judas Arnold received 5,000 pds. sterling for his treachery & we find has lodged the money in the British funds, but he has not spirit enough to pursue the character in the only part  worthy of imitation."
More ftpg. war-related content in a letter signed in type: George Germain.
Page 2 has a great wealth of fine war-related content. A few bits include: "It is not easy to make any thing out of Lord Cornwallis's present movements. The fleet with about 1300 troops...were...still in Hampton Road..." and further on: "...It appears to me that this state will not be evacuated, nor their design of penetrating Maryland even suspended at this moment unless the French have obtained such a naval superiority as to place New York and Charlestown in the last degree of danger..."
Also an extract from General Orders of July 19, 1781 beginning: "The Commander in Chief is exceedingly pleased with the conduct of Major Gen. Howe for marching with so much alacrity & rapidity to the defence of the stores at Tarry-Town & repulsing the enemy from thence..." and later on: "...Late accounts from the Southward inform us that the enemy have destroyed their works at Ninety-Six in South Carolina & retired to Monk's Corner...".
Another report begins: "General Washington's position is from Dobb's Ferry to the Bronx, miles from King's Bridge & the reports there are that he is waiting for  the arrival of a French fleet  to attack New York by sea..." with more.
Yet another item mentions: "...that Lord Rawdon had quitted the fort at Ninety-Six & taken post at Orangeburgh; & that there had been an engagement between the British & rebels at Monk's Corner & that the latter were defeated."
So much more good war content, too much to mention here, but portions can be seen in the photos.
Four pages, ornate lettering in the masthead, a bit of foxing, very nice condition.
