THE NEW YORK HERALD--EXTRA, July 5, 1863

* Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
* Most historic battle of the Civil War

A terrific and quite graphic issue on the Battle of Gettysburg with nearly a full front page column of heads concerning the battle, including a nice patriotic graphic (see). Note that most of these heads are actually in the Herald issue of July 6, but this being a large date "Extra" issue, they were simply held over for the following day--terrific as such.
Among the heads are: "Glorious News" "A GREAT VICTORY!" "Terrific & Unparalleled Conflict" "The Rebels Utterly Routed" "They Retreat & Are Pursued by the Union Forces" "Official Despatch from General Meade" "The Rebels Repulsed in Every Attack" and much more. Included also is "The President To The Country" which is his announcement of the victory of the Yankee forces, signed in type: Abraham Lincoln.
More related reports on pages 2, 3 & 4 including a pg. 4 map of: "ROSECRANS' VICTORIES - The Affair at Hoover's Gap..."
Complete in 4 pages as an "Extra" edition although paginated 1, 4, 5, 8. Browning at the folds with some rubbing near the fold juncture on the front page only.
