* Early report on the Greenback Raid
Although there is much Civil War reporting on the front page perhaps the most significant a brief item near the bottom of the back, headed: "Guerrillas at Work Again on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad" which reads: "A party of guerrillas captured the westward bound train on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad last night, robbed the passengers and burned the cars. No other particulars have been received." This is a very early report & consequently has few details. It is following by another headed: "Guerrillas in Maryland" mentioning that: "A small body of Moseby's guerrillas crossed the Potomac into Montgomery County, Md....".
This is concerning Mosby's famous "Greenback Raid" during which he derailed a train and robbed the paymaster's box of $173,000. This successful Confederate attack on a major transportation artery of the Yankee forces did much to boost morale in the Confederacy during the closing months of the Civil War, and also was the exploit for which John Mosby would be forever known.
Other front page heads on the Civil War include: "Treason in Indiana" "The Raid Into Tennessee" "Invasion of Kentucky" "Jefferson Davis's Confession" "General Grant's Operations" "The Approaching Fate of Richmond" and more.
