A terrific issue with one of the more ironic twists of history, and only to be found in a newspaper from Washington, D.C.
Near the top of the front page is an article headed: "Ford's New Theatre--The Lady of Lyons". The writer reports on this production of "The Lady Of Lyons" which includes: "...Mr. J. Wilkes Booth appears as Claude Melnotte, a part in which, it is said, he stands without a peer..." and further on: "...Tonight's entertainment will doubtless fill Ford's to overflowing...To-morrow evening Mr. Booth has a benefit, and appears in two splendid Shakespearean plays, via. the Merchant of Venice and the comedy of Katherine and Petruchio, being his first appearance in a comedy role during this engagement..." and a bit more.
Of added interest is the advertisement which appears at the top of page 3, headed: "Ford's New Theatre" which includes within the text: "...The Lady Of Lyons. Mr. J. Wilkes Booth as.....Claude Melnotte." and also: "To-morrow (Friday) evening, BENEFIT of J. WILKES BOOTH, Saturday evening, November 7th, last time positively of RICHARD THE THIRD."
It would be easy to assume that the front page editorial on the performance, as well as the page 3 advertisement for Ford's Theater, would only be found in a Washington, D.C. newspaper.
