THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, May, 1774  This issue begins with the: "Memoirs of the Life of the Late King of France" which is accompanied by a full page plate of him: "Lewis XV, King of France and Navarre..." who died on May 10, 1774. Actually this plate is not called for in the title/contents page but is here because the article is, plus it is called for in the master index of Gentleman's Magazine.
Also in this issue; "New Observations on the Antiquity of Stonehenge" "A Tour in the Midland Counties of England" and much more. Near the back is the Historical Chronicle with the latest news reports of the day including a section headed: "American Affairs". It includes a report on the proceedings of impeachment against Peter Oliver, Chief Justice of the Superior court in Mass. Also included is an address by the governor signed in type: T. Hutchinson (see).
Also included is the plate called for, being: "A Plan of the Navigable Canal now Making from Cooper Bridge to Huddersfield in the County of York" which folds out to 8 1/2 by 12 1/4 inches.
Complete in 48 pages, 5 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate. In very nice condition.

A very nice magazine from the "mother country" months before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
