THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Sept. 27, 1783 It was on Sept. 3, 1783 when that Treaty of Paris was formally signed by all parties. There were actually four treaties involving England with America, France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic.
The treaty would be printed in the next issue of this newspaper (September 30), however page 6 has a notable, yet brief, report: "A letter from the Hague brings advice that preparations are making for great rejoicings there, on account of a messenger being sent off to Paris with the ratification of the Definitive Articles of Peace."
Additionally, the back page has: "By the King, A PROCLAMATION" concerning the treaty, including; "Whereas a Definitive Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Us, the Most Christian King, and the King of Spain, have been concluded at Versailles on the 3d day of this instant September...".
Equally as significant is a nice report on the first "passenger" flight of a hot air balloon by the famed Montgolfier brothers. Previous test flights were "unmanned" with the first with passengers--a sheep, a duck, and a rooster--was on Sept. 19, 1783. This report, from a letter from Paris dated Sept. 20, includes: "Yesterday was tried...the experiment of the areostatic globe. The greatest concourse of people assembled...at Versailles...To its inferior part a large wicker basket was fastened containing a sheep, a duck, and a cock. The elevation of the globe was estimated at about 200 fathoms..." with more detail. A very historic report..
Eight pages, 8 1/4 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
