January 01, 1778

THE LONDON MAGAZINE, England, January, 1778  Over 2 pages are taken up with a: "Dialogue Between an Englishman and an American Descendant from  English Ancestors" (see for portions). Over 2 pages near the back has: "American Affairs" which includes a report from Vice Admiral Lord Viscount Howe on the state of the navy in American waters, written from on board his ship Eagle in the Delaware River. Also mention of the American victory at Saratoga: "The unfortunate event of Lt. General Burgoyne's operations with the northerN army terminating, as I am advised by the commander in chief, with the surrender of those troops agreeable to the tenor of a convention executed the 16th of last October...".
There are additional reports of the actions of Lord Cornwallis and a naval encounter causing the death of 400 Americans (see). One item notes: "...an account of General Howe's  endeavours to bring the rebels to a general engagement. With this view he marched his army to White March where the enemy's whole force lay strongly entrenched. Several skirmishes ensured...put the enemy to flight in every attack with slaughter...returned on the 8th of December to Philadelphia where the troops are now gone into winter quarters...".
Complete in 48 pages, 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches, minor loss to blank margin near the back, very nice condition. Lacking both plates called for.

Formatted very much like the Gentleman's Magazine but a much more scarce title. The title/contents page features a great engraving of the skyline of London.
