April 24, 1783

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, April 24, 1783  Close to half of the front page is: "On the American Trade" being a letter signed "a merchant" as how to make it happen after the independence of America. Another ftpg. item mentions: "That Sir Guy Carleton had issued a Proclamation inviting those American who had quitted their houses at New York to return & repossess them; that the communication was opened between the city & country in consequence of which the Aid du Camp of General Washington...that the British garrison were preparing to evacuate the place; that the soldiers, particularly the Hessians, daily deserted in great numbers."
Page 3 has a letter from New Jersey concerning troubles with the French. Over half of pg. 4 is an: "Account of the Capture of the Hudson's Bay Company's Settlements". And page 5 has nearly a column headed: "America" with news from Congress on congratulations to General Greene for his work at recapturing the Southern states. Also a letter from "Head Quarters, Newburgh" noting: "The evacuation of Charlestown [Charleston], and the total liberation of the Southern States from the power of the enemy are important events of which the Commander in Chief has now received official information...The enemy, after more than a seven years war, and all their boasted conquests, being now reduced to narrower limits and a weaker force than they were possessed of seven years ago..."with more.
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 1/4 inches, good condition.
