WEEKLY PATRIOT UNION, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, July 9, 1863

* Battle of Gettysburg - Civil War
* From the capital of Pennsylvania

As terrific as it would be to find a newspaper from Gettysburg on the Battle of Gettysburg, we have yet to find one. Which is why this newspaper from nearby Harrisburg--just up the road from Gettysburg by 38 miles, the capital of Pennsylvania, the closest major city of the battle, as well as the destination of Robert E. Lee and his troops--is such a terrific newspaper.
Being a weekly newspaper and the first issue after the Battle of Gettysburg, the entire front page (save for a bit on the "Surrender of Vicksburg") is taken up with a recap of the events from the Battle of Gettysburg. The reports are headed: "The Situation" and begins: "We have but little to add to our report of yesterday morning. No passes are given to civilians across the river, and all we know is that the invading host is in full & rapid retreat..." . The balance of the page has various reports from the last week, with subheads and dateline including: "From the Daily, July 3" "Later and Highly Important" "A Battle Progressing" "From the Daily, July 4" "The Latest--Favorable News" "Second Dispatch" "Congratulatory Order of Gen. Meade" dated "Near Gettysburg, July 4" and more. There is also the: ""Address of President Lincoln" concerning the battle, signed by him in type: Abraham Lincoln.
Over half of page 6 is taken up with considerable reporting headed: "The Battle of Gettysburg" with reports from various newspapers and datelines from July 1 thru July 5, some subheads including: "The Casualties" "Battle of Gettysburg--The Fight on Thursday" "The Battle of Friday--A Terrific Cannonade--The Rebel Assaults Repulsed with Terrible Havoc..." "The Latest From the Army of the Potomac--The Victory Grows Brighter--The Rebels In Full Retreat..." and even more. Included also are three dispatches signed in type by General George Meade. Page 7 has a General Order signed in type by R. E. Lee from Chambersburg, Pa., June 27.
A great issue with an incredible wealth of content on Gettysburg, not surprising given the anxiety of the Harrisburg residents due to their proximity to the battlefield.
Complete in eight page, nice condition.
