August 09, 1937

THE NEW YORK TIMES, August 9, 1937

* Reverend Martin Niemöller parade
* Anti-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor
* Famous "First they came..." statement fame

The top of the front page has a two column heading: "115 Seized in Niemoeller Parade, Believed First Anti-Nazi Massing" with subhead. (see)
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 34 pages, light toning at the margins, nice condition.

Note: While Reverend Niemöller was already well-known, he is currently best-known for his famous quote regarding his arrest:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Since this quote did not come until much later in his life, it is not within this newspaper report.
