Siege of Havana, Cuba... Plate of a new prison...
Item # 642788 GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, September, 1762 The prime content is the lengthy text concerning the taking of Havana, Cuba. The Battle of Havana was a military action in the spring & summer of 1762 which was part of the Seven Years' War, or the French & Indian War for that portion fought in the Americas, during which British forces besieged & captured the city of Havana which had been an important Spanish naval base in the Caribbean. It dealt a serious blow to the Spanish navy, but ultimately Cuba was returned to Spain under the terms of the 1763 Treaty of Paris which ended the war. This detailed coverage takes over 4 pages (see for portions).
Also in this issue is a lengthy: "Account of M. du Perron's Voyage to India" which takes over 4 pages.
Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" which has the latest news reports of the day, mostly European, but there is a section headed "America" which includes a situation regarding Indians (see).
Included is the foldout plate: "Elevation of an Intended New Building for the Reception of Felons...at Newgate..." showing several views of it, measuring 7 3/4 by 18 inches. This is the only plate called for in this issue (see).
Complete in 48 pages, 5 3/4 by 8 3/4 inches with wide, never-trimmed margins, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate. In very nice condition.
A very nice French & Indian War era magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
