Lady Pirrie death... Titanic builder's wife...

Item # 639945

June 20, 1935

THE NEW YORK TIMES, June 20, 1935

* Lady Pirrie death (1st report)
* Wife of RMS Titanic shipbuilder

The top of page 19 is a one column heading: "LADY PIRRIE DEAD; HEADED SHIP FIRM" with subheads and photo. (see) She was the wife of William Pirrie, 1st Viscount Pirrie. He was a Irish shipbuilder who was responsible for the small number of lifeboats aboard the RMS Titanic. He claimed the ship was unsinkable. I suspect this is one of the few publications to report this particular event as other titles in our inventory do not.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 42 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition.
