THE NEW YORK TIMES, February 9, 1934
* Barker-Karpis Gang kidnapping
* Arthur "Doc" & Fred Barker - Alvis Karpis
* Verne Sankey prison cell suicide
The top of the front page has a two column headline: "KIDNAPPERS FREE BREMER ON PAYMENT OF $200,000; WIDE MANHUNT PUSHED" with subheads. (see) First report coverage continues on page 3 with two related photos. Lengthy text. Of course it was not known at the time this was the work of the Barker-Karpis gang.
Near the bottom of the front page is a two column heading: "Verne Sankey, Kidnapper, Hangs Himself With Neckties in His South Dakota Cell" (see)
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 42 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition
