NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., July 10, 1849  The third page carries a report "Ship Pacific" in which the ship had received monies to in advance to take passages to California for $300 with a limit of fifty passengers, but had sold to seventy-five without having proper state room space and were taken to court.
The back page carries "Salem, Massachusetts" in which a gentleman is writing of his travels to Salem, noting of the fine Naumkeag Cotton Factory, railroad business and museum. The letter ends with "You will of course expect me, before closing this letter to allude to the Witches of Salem. I have visited the identical spots with which they are associated, and have to record, that in the court-house of the city are to be seen the clothes, and a variety of pins, which were used by the ancient Hecates in the olden time. But enough, the cars are in sight, and I must close by brief epistle."
