September 09, 1940

THE NEW YORK TIMES, September 9, 1940

* Austin Callaway, LaGrange, Georgia lynching
* The Blitz (1st Phase) (early report)
* Germany bombs London England

The front page has a nice banner headline: "MIGHTY NAZI AIR FLEETS AGAIN BOMB LONDON; DOCKS AND PLANTS HIT, FIRES RAGE, 400 DEAD; GOERING DIRECTING 'NEW PHASE OF THE WAR'" with subheads. (see) Lengthy text.
Page 17 has small one column headings: "NEGRO LYNCHED IN GEORGIA" "Taken From Cell and Shot After Alleged Attack on Woman" First report coverage on the lynching of negro Austin Callaway in LaGrange, Louisiana. I suspect this is one of the few publications to report this particular event as other titles in our inventory do not.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 34 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition.
