Tony Nathan and the Alabama Crimson Tide secure SEC title...

Item # 629045

November 06, 1977

THE NEW YORK TIMES, November 6, 1977

* Tony Nathan, of "Woodlawn" fame, rushes for two touchdowns and throws for another
* Alabama secures the SEC title - setting the stage for a trip to the Sugar Bowl

Page 9 of the sports section has: "Alabama Wins, Clinches S.E.C. Title, Bowl Birth", followed by text which includes in part, "Tony Nathan scored two touchdowns on 1-yard plunges and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass as second-ranked Alabama overcame a rash of fumbles to down Louisiana State, 24-3, today and capture its sixth Southeastern Conference championship in seven years." This is the report of Tony Nathan, of Woodlawn fame, who overcame severe racial obstacles in Birmingham, Alabama on his way to becoming a major contributor to both an NCAA (Alabama Crimson Tide) and NFL (Miami Dolphins) championship team. Other sporting news includes coverage of Ken Norton's defeat of Jimmy Young, and of O.J. Simpson's status as a NFL-worn running back (with photo).
Complete 1st section and sports section only (this was a multi-section Sunday edition), with the front section and front page showing wear (print creases, mid-fold discoloration, etc.), but the key sports section for which this is being offered is very nice (see images). The front section is being included to provide context only.
