March 04, 1820

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, March 4, 1820 [with Supplement]  "District of Maine" is a document taking over half a page relating to its admission into the Union, which was part of the Missouri Compromise. There is also much reporting from Congress, taking several pages.
Attached to this issue is the 8 page Supplement issue which is almost entirely taken up with the debate in the House of Representatives on the: "Missouri Question". This was the very contentious issue concerning slavery in the territory, and whether Missouri would be admitted to the Union as a slave or free state. Ultimately the "Missouri Compromise" of 1821 would resolve the issue but the slavery issue would not fully be resolved until the Civil War.
Measures 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches, 24 pages, scattered foxing, generally nice condition.

As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
