Page 3 has a report headed: "A Golden Joke" which focuses on a letter from San Francisco which includes in part: "After a journey of several thousand miles, during which we have suffered more than I was formerly led to believe human beings could endure, we have at last arrived on the borders of the Pacific Ocean..." and which includes an grizzly encounter with a pack of wolves as they crossed the continent. Then the story gets more fantastical, with: "...Before us lay what appeared to be an immense city with its pinnacles, domes and house-tops apparently gilded...crossing a ravine we arrived at what we had presumed was a city, but which proved to be a mountain of pure gold!..." with more (see photos).
There is also an article: "California" which reports of a letter received by the mother of a man in California which notes: "Dear Mother; enclosed is a draft of $2,000; don't be sparing of it, for I have plenty of the same sort left..." and just a bit more (see photos).
Four pages, various foxing, otherwise good.
