Page 2 has a report from a letter from New York which notes in part: "Our force here & on Long and Staten Islands...would exceed 20,000 men..." with the detail of the county (see). Also: "It has been talked of here to offer the rebel officers the same rank they hold under their Congress on coming over to us. It is thought this would give us the whole rebel army. The people have been so harassed & plundered by the Congress that the whole country is almost unanimous for a submission...There is a general want of provisions & cloathing in the Northern Colonies. Ladies of the best families...have only worn socks made of wollen & even linen rags sewed together instead of shoes...In South Carolina things are in nearly the same state..." with a bit more (see).
