September 13, 1781

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Sept. 13, 1781  The front page has a report which includes: "From New York...we have a letter from a field officer...which says, 'Count Rochambeau having found the attack upon New York, as planned by Mr. Washington, to be impracticable, proposes to retire with his troops to Rhode Island. General Clinton will certainly attack Washington's lines before the French leave him..." & "...that the utmost harmony subsists between the American & French troops from the Commander in chief to the private soldier, you may depend that such accounts are false...letters from New York mention that the Congress had given orders for the capturing all the Spanish flags that had any of the garrison of Pensacola on board, as by the capitulation of that place the troops taken there might act against the Americans...". An inside page has an account of an attempt of the French to take a post at Lloyd's Neck, and further on is an: "Extract of a Letter from Staten Island" and a report datelined "New York, July 25" which begins: "We hear a great number of the inhabitants who formerly lived on Long Island but went to Connecticut about 5 years ago accompanied the French troops who lately visited Loyd's Neck in expectation of being reinstated on their plantations..." with more. Also an item from Philadelphia which begins: "The enemy have plundered several people in the neighbourhood of Williamsburgh. They are now encamped at James Town. We expect a general engagement every day..." & more (see photos). Another report under the heading: "America" has some naval reports, plus an "Extract of a Letter from Savannah in Georgia" which includes: "...notwithstanding upwards of 500 rebels made a shew of investing both Col. Brown & Col. Grierson's posts...Col. Brown made a sally on the rebels, killed upwards of ninety...".
