December 22, 1778
THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, Dec. 22, 1778  The front page has over half a column headed: "America" with reports from New York and Williamsburgh, noting in part: "...that the Congress has ordered David Franks, Agent for the British prisoners of war, to be confined in the new gaol of that city...that Abraham Carlisle & Mr. Roberts...have been tried for what they term high treason, found guilty, & were to be executed last Wednesday."
But by far the best report in this issue is the ftpg. item from Williamsburgh which has the only mentioned we have found thus far of Daniel Boone during the Revolutionary War.The  report notes: "Col. Clark, with a body of militia, has taken possession of fort Chartress & the other western ports between the rivers Ohio and Mississippi...Capt. Boon, the famous partizan, has lately crossed the Ohio  with a small detachment of men, & near the Shawnese towns repulsed a party of the enemy & brought to one scalp without any loss on his side..." with more. History books tell us of Daniel Boone's involvement with the Shawnee Indians during the Revolutionary War.
Page 2 has a note that: "...the refugees of America now in England are forbidden to return on pain of transportation & on their second return, on pain of suffering death without benefit of clergy, their estates being confiscate to the use of the United States." (see)
Another page is mostly taken up with an: "Extract From the Trial of Major-General Lee" which includes his plea of "Not Guilty", as well as a lengthy letter from him, and a letter signed in type by: George Washington, which ends with: "...in not attacking them as you had been directed, & in making an unnecessary, disorderly and shameful retreat." (see)
And also of much significance is a back page printing of the oath of officers in the military, prefaced with: "Congress took into consideration the form of the oath to be taken by the officers in the service of the Continent, which was agreed to as follows:" and what follows is the text of the oath (see). This is followed by more war-related news, including mention that: "...well assured Mr. Washington intended to fix his head-quarters this winter at Morristown in the Jerseys, where part of his army is already sent."
A terrific issue with much good content. Eight pages, 8 1/4 by 11 inches, very nice, clean condition.
