July 30, 1886

DEMOCRATIC WATCHMAN, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, July 30, 1886

* Geronimo evades capture
* Chiricahua Apaches chief

Page 2 has over a half column article: "Our Indian War" which has at the top a nice illustration of: "Geronimo--The Hostile Apache Chieftain Whom Our Soldiers Fail To Capture". It is not common to find prints of Geronimo in newspapers of the day. The article begins: "A force of United States soldiers has been operating against Geronimo...since May, 1885...the Indian has more than managed to hold his own against his powerful enemies..." with much more (see images). He would be captured in September.
Among the tidbits on the same page: "Jules Verne, who was shot by a made nephew at Amiens in March, is convalescent." and "Jefferson Davis, as an officer in the Black Hawk war, administered the oath of allegiance to Abraham Lincoln, entering the service as a lieutenant."

Other news and advertisements of the day are within. Eight pages, great condition.
