THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, July 24, 1781 

* A naval encounter 

An inside page has: "American News" taken from the New York Gazette and includes mention of a naval encounter, and: "...was so discouraging a circumstance as to prevent the greater part of the militia from proceeding...consented to continue their march, & after suffering every inconvenience from a heavy road...knowing themselves still undiscovered they immediately attacked & so completely surprised them as to kill one, mortally wound another, made 20 prisoners..." (see). Another report includes: "...induce us to believe that their motives for granting commissions to plunder the inhabitants of Long Island were good & proceeded from their zeal to promote the cause..." with more (see).
The back page has a "...letter from New York" which begins: "It is now certain that Lord Cornwallis is arrived with his army in Virginia & we are indaily expectation of hearing of an action between him and the Marquis la Fayette...there are 5000 "French troops within 60 miles of this city upon Hudson's River..." and further on has: "...several passengers that had lately been prisoners at Boston...General Arnold is returned from Virginia after effecting the destruction of a large quantity of tobacco, stores, etc. belonging to the rebels there..." and more (see)
Complete in 8 pages, 9 by 12 inches, never bound nor trimmed, nice condition.
