A page 3 report from the "Catskill, N.Y. Reporter" says:

* A fountain of carburetted hydrogen gas has been discovered in the bottom of Catskill Creek, near the foot of Main Street in this village

Mentions an experiment was conducted in which fire was applied to the water resulting in a form of combustion. Mentions that "...with the proper apparatus, a quantity of gas might be.. .useful ...in lighting the village..."
