"One of the wildest mining camps in the West" & a very short-lived newspaper...
Item # 209251 THE DAILY JOURNAL, Pioche, Nevada, 1875 Pioche is located about 180 miles northeast of Las Vegas, hanging on the side of a mountain of Nevada's high desert. In the 1870's it was considered one of the wildest mining camps in the West. According to a number of sources, hired gunmen were imported at the rate of about twenty a day during boom times to fight mining claim encroachments. Evidence of the 'toughest town' image was their "Boot Row" where 75 men were buried before anyone in the roaring mining town died of a natural death. The town grew rapidly in the early 1870's and business and population increased with the increasing shipments of bullion until it had become the most active and important mining town in southeastern Nevada by 1871.
This issue is complete in 4 pages, with ads filling pgs. 1 & 4 and pgs. 2 & 3 having news of the day & some additional ads. A very early & scarce title which only lasted for a bit more than a year in this tiny town of the remote regions of eastern Nevada. Never-trimmed margins, a news agent's stamp in the masthead, some tears at the margin and an occasional archival mend. Generally in nice condition. The photo below is "generic" however the issue you receive will have a similar look and will be dated 1875.
