First action of the new goverment under the Constitution...



Item # 121156 GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, August, 1789  Among the articles are one concerning "...the new grass brought from the banks of the Santee in South Carolina..." with details, and includes 2 illustrations on a full page plate; "Strictures on the Absurd Custom of Dueling" "Proposal for the Prevention of Dueling" and so much more. Near the back is news headed: "America" with a report from Boston noting: "The first proceedings of the Congress under the new constitution of the United States has been to establish a permanent system of revenue...A list of permanent duties on importation & exportation of goods..." and more.
Complete in 96 pages, 5 by 8 inches, full title/contents page featuring an engraving of St. John's Gate, nice condition.

A very nice magazine from the "mother country" not long after the end of the Revolutionary War. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
