CANAL RECORD, Ancon, Canal Zone, 1909  This small-size periodical from the Isthmus of Panama is an interesting newspaper published by the "Isthmian Canal Commission", given free of charge to employees of the Commission & the Panama Railroad Company. It lasted for several years documenting the construction of the Panama Canal, considered one of the finest engineering achievements of the early 20th century - now well-over 100 years old. It would officially open in 1914.

ALL THE YEAR ROUND, London, 1862 (single issue from 1862)  This was a weekly periodical "Conducted By Charles Dickens", as noted in the masthead. Filled with various literary content, this issue contains 24 pages is in very nice, clean condition, 6 by 9 1/4 inches. Nice to have the "Charles Dickens" name in the title.
Disbound without wrappers.  The image is an example of the look of the issue you will receive but the actual date within 1862 will vary. 

COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, 1807-1809  A lot of 10 issues of this popular title from the "Hub City". All have the subscriber's name written in the margin above the masthead, some minor edge tears, a few scattered stains, and occasional foxing, but overall, quite nice.

VOSSA SENHORIA, Divinopolis, Brazil, 2003  A fascinating curiosity as this is the smallest newspaper in the world (as recognized by Guinness Book of Records). This monthly newspaper started in 1935 as a solution for creating a quality low-cost newspaper. Mostly in Portuguese, and containing 24 pages. Each issue is different so the issue you receive may differ from what is seen in the photo, but the format is the same. About the size of a postage stamp, it measures about 1 by 1 1/2 inches! …

(15) SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York  A lot of 15 2nd-rate issues from 1880's and 1890's, containing many photos or illustrations, providing a nice look at the latest inventions and scientific improvements of the 19th century. Offered at a discount due to minor imperfections (slight staining, edge tears, library ink stamps, etc.) making them 2nd-rate.

BREWERY & SOFT DRINK WORKERS' JOURNAL, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1918  An interesting folio size newspaper for members of the: "International Union of United Brewery & Soft Drink Workers" from just a year before Prohibition. Two of the inside pages are in German. An interesting newspaper for display in a home bar, etc.
Four pages, lightly toned, some minor margin tears, small binding slits at the spine margin, good condition. Should be handled with care.

THE ATHENIAN MERCURY by John Dunton, London, England, 1692-1694. This was a fine gentleman's newspaper which was very popular in the coffeehouses of early England. Interesting reading on a wide range of topics & one of the earliest periodicals in English. Partially in question/answer format. This newspaper was published before any American newspapers even existed.

VOTES OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, London, England, 1699  This was not a newspaper in the ordinary sense, but rather an official parliamentary publication that recorded the daily proceedings, decisions, resolutions, and votes of the British House of Commons. It was one of the most important governmental publications of the 18th century and served as the authoritative public record of parliamentary business.

THE TIMES, London, England, 1797  Perhaps the most revered newspaper in the world, it began in 1785 under the title "The Daily Universal Register", adopting its modern name on January 1, 1788.

THE SADDLE BLANKET, 2nd Cavalry Brigade, Admiralty Islands, July 25, 1944  This is the volume 1, number 5 issue of a camp newspaper produced by & for soldiers. The Admiralty Islands are an archipelago group of 40 islands to the north of New Guinea in the South Pacific Ocean.
As was typical of most military camp newspapers of World War II it was crudely produced on a mimeograph machine, typewriter set with hand-drawn cartoons.

It includes several pages on: "Sir James Lowther's Motions Against Continuing the American War", now that the news of Cornwallis' surrender has been digested.

COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, March 26, 1794  The front page begins with an Act of Congress relating to French vessels taking refuge in United States ports. It is signed in script type by the President: Go. Washington, and in block type by the Vice President: John Adams.
Page 2 has a letter from an officer in General Anthony Wayne's army relating to the Northwest Indian War and General St. Clair.

THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, November 21, 1861  This was an anti-war newspaper that insisted that slavery should not be abolished, so much of its content has an anti-North bias.
Page 6 has an article (reprinted from I.M. Wise's 'The Israelite'), which has much related to "The Chaplaincy Controversy of 1861". This was a noteworthy event in Jewish American History as until this time, only Christian clergymen were permitted to serve as U.S. Chaplains.

EXTRA GLOBE, Washington, D.C., Oct. 8, 1832  This was a short-lived campaign newspaper that existed to promote the re-election of Andrew Jackson for the presidency. It existed only form May 10, 1832 thru Feb. 28, 1833.
In the 19th century campaign newspapers were the primary--and in some cases only--means of promoting the platform and attributes of a candidate for President.

THE NATIONAL ERA, Washington, D.C., Oct. 14, 1852  This newspaper is forever linked to the best-selling novel of the 19th century: "Uncle Tom's Cabin", for the book was originally released as a 40 week serial in this anti-slavery newspaper beginning in June, 1851. It was the newspaper's publisher who encouraged Stowe to produce the work in book form, and it is common consensus that the book had much to do with popularizing sentiment which lead to the Civil War.

NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington D.C., Feb. 28, 1811  Page 3 has: "An Act to enable the people of the Territory of Orleans to form a constitution and state government, and for the admission of such state into the Union, on a equal footing with the original states." Quite detailed and signed in type: James Madison.
This was the first formal step to allow Louisiana to join the Union, which it would formally do in 1816.

BLACK RIVER GAZETTE, Ludlow, Vermont, July 26, 1876  This title existed for just ten years from Dec., 1866 thru Nov., 1876. This is the first of this title we have encountered in our 50+ years. Gregory's 'Union List of American Newspapers' notes only two institutions have this date.
