ADVOCATE FAMILY GUARDIAN, New York, 1865  A rather ornate & decorative masthead in this small newspaper, filled primarily with literary & womanly concerns. Edited by Mrs. Sarah R. Bennett of the "American Female Guardian Society". Note that the photo is "generic" and the issue you get will be from 1865 & will have the format shown. Measures approximately 11 by 9 inches, 12 pages, occasional foxing.

COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, 1807-1809  A lot of 10 issues of this popular title from the "Hub City". All have the subscriber's name written in the margin above the masthead, some minor edge tears, a few scattered stains, and occasional foxing, but overall, quite nice.

ALL THE YEAR ROUND, London, 1862 (single issue from 1862)  This was a weekly periodical "Conducted By Charles Dickens", as noted in the masthead. Filled with various literary content, this issue contains 24 pages is in very nice, clean condition, 6 by 9 1/4 inches. Nice to have the "Charles Dickens" name in the title.
Disbound without wrappers.  The image is an example of the look of the issue you will receive but the actual date within 1862 will vary. 

(15) SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York  A lot of 15 2nd-rate issues from 1880's and 1890's, containing many photos or illustrations, providing a nice look at the latest inventions and scientific improvements of the 19th century. THE CIRCULAR or AMERICAN SOCIALIST, Oneida, New York, 1870's  A lot of 10 issues from this well-known socialist "commune" (of Oneida flatware/silverware fame) from the post-Civil War 19th century. All are in great condition. Small folio size, 4 pages.

NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington D.C., Feb. 28, 1811  Page 3 has: "An Act to enable the people of the Territory of Orleans to form a constitution and state government, and for the admission of such state into the Union, on a equal footing with the original states." Quite detailed and signed in type: James Madison.
This was the first formal step to allow Louisiana to join the Union, which it would formally do in 1816.
Four pages, nice condition.

NATIONAL AEGIS, Worcester, Massachusetts, Aug. 3, 1808  Half of the front page is taken up with eight Acts of Congress, one for carrying into effect Indian treaties, one allow for voting in the Indiana Territory, & another for erecting a lighthouse on te island of Sapelo near Darien, Ct. Each is signed in type by the President: Th. Jefferson.
Four pages, various foxing throughout, good condition.

EXTRA GLOBE, Washington, D.C., Oct. 8, 1832  This was a short-lived campaign newspaper that existed to promote the re-election of Andrew Jackson for the presidency. It existed only form May 10, 1832 thru Feb. 28, 1833.
In the 19th century campaign newspapers were the primary--and in some cases only--means of promoting the platform and attributes of a candidate for President.

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, June 4, 1836  Inside has "Capture Of Santa Ana" which includes three letters from him with one that begins: "Having yesterday had an unfortunate encounter, I have resolved to remain a prisoner of war in the hands of the enemy...". BLACK RIVER GAZETTE, Ludlow, Vermont, July 26, 1876  This title existed for just ten years from Dec., 1866 thru Nov., 1876. This is the first of this title we have encountered in our 50+ years. Gregory's 'Union List of American Newspapers' notes only two institutions have this date.

THE WAR, New York, Nov. 7, 1812  The entire front page & some of page 2 are taken up with a letter from Gen. Van Rensselaer to Gen. Henry Dearborn datelined from "Head-Quarters, Lewiston". In this famous battle, which happened just the day before the letter was written, Van Rensselaer led his forces across the Niagara River to capture Queenston Heights, Ontario. British General Isaac Brock was killed but the Americans were ultimately defeated.

DAILY ALTA CALIFORNIA, San Francisco, May 29, 1851  The very first title in the Golden State was the "Californian" begun in 1846, followed the next year by the "California Star". These two titles merged, and in 1849 the combined enterprise was called the "Alta California", becoming a daily in July.
This is a volume 2 issue from just 8 months after statehood. It also became the first successful newspaper in California, lasting until 1891.

THE NATIONAL ERA, Washington, D.C., Oct. 14, 1852  This newspaper is forever linked to the best-selling novel of the 19th century: "Uncle Tom's Cabin", for the book was originally released as a 40 week serial in this anti-slavery newspaper beginning in June, 1851. It was the newspaper's publisher who encouraged Stowe to produce the work in book form, and it is common consensus that the book had much to do with popularizing sentiment which lead to the Civil War.

Page 6 has an article (reprinted from I.M. Wise's 'The Israelite'), which has much related to "The Chaplaincy Controversy of 1861". This was a noteworthy event in Jewish American History as until this time, only Christian clergymen were permitted to serve as U.S. Chaplains.

THE CONNECTICUT COURANT, Hartford, June 14, 1809  Page 2 has a report from New York noting: "Died, on Thursday morning, the 8th inst. Thomas Paine, author of the Crisis, Rights of Man, etc. Mr. Paine had a desire to be interred in the Quakers burying ground and some days previous to his demise...He was yesterday interred at New Rochelle...I am unacquainted with his age, but he had lived long, done some good, and much harm."
